Mayors Message

Hi all,

I hope everyone had a meaningful Easter and Passover!

A couple of special shoutouts this week:

To Tyrone “Yogi” Williams for organizing Nyack’s first annual Easter Egg Hunt in Memorial Park. It was a huge hit with families and kids, and we’re hoping it becomes a new tradition—thank you, Yogi!

To all the volunteers who came out this weekend to join Keep Rockland Beautiful in the "Nyack Community Cleanup", helping to beautify the village and the rest of the Nyacks!

A big thank you to the Nyack Chamber of Commerce and Visit Nyack for organizing Nyack Restaurant Week, featuring over 30 participating restaurants! 🍽️

This year’s event includes the exciting “Pair Your Faire” initiative, highlighting local merchants and personal service businesses alongside your favorite dining spots.

📅 It all kicks off Wednesday, April 23 and runs through May 1 — so be sure to make your reservations early!

We’re grateful to everyone who works so hard to make Nyack such a special place. ❤️

🏛️ Village Board Meeting – This Thursday at 7:30 PM

Join us at Village Hall for our regular meeting. On the agenda:

  • Public Hearing #1: A proposal to establish a 2,000-foot buffer between cannabis dispensaries, to prevent overconcentration downtown.

  • Public Hearing #2: A review of visibility rules for corner lots—a.k.a. the “hedge rules.”

There’s been a lot of buzz about the cannabis dispensary opening soon at the old Starbucks location. It’s important to understand the reasoning behind the proposed proximity rule.

Currently, state law prevents dispensaries from opening within 2,000 feet of each other in towns under 20,000 residents—like Nyack. That’s why the new “Starbucks” dispensary blocks any others from opening nearby under current rules.

But that could change. In fact, the state cannabis board recently proposed shrinking that distance to 1,000 feet. If that happens, another dispensary could potentially open downtown—in areas like South Broadway or South Franklin.

Personally, I don’t think it would be a crisis, but I do think we should take it slow. That’s why, after careful thought and conversations with my fellow Board members, I support putting a local 2,000-foot rule in place. Not because I’m anti-cannabis—but because I believe in a "wait and see" approach. Let’s evaluate the impact on traffic, parking, and downtown culture before we go further.

We can always revisit the rule and adjust if needed in the future.

If you have thoughts, questions, or concerns—on this or anything else—please reach out at joerand@nyack.gov or 845-358-0229.

Wishing you a great week,

JR
