Mayors MessageHello all, Just wanted to offer congratulations to our friends at the Fresh Market on their “Grand Re-Opening” this past Saturday. I think it’s remarkable that the operators opened themselves up to the public to talk about their challenges and ask for guidance about what our community wants in a local supermarket. If you’ve not been there recently, please go check it out and maybe make it a part of your shopping routine. Remember, we all want a vibrant downtown, but we need to support all the businesses that support us! Speaking of which, the Nyack Restaurant Week continues this week until Thursday, May 1 – make sure to check out the participating restaurants, which you can find at this link. Some other major updates that I want to share: 1. NY Forward Grant Update – First Meeting May 6th, 5:30PM As you all know, Nyack won a competitive grant of $4.5M for downtown revitalization a month ago. We are now starting the process of reviewing grants, which will be an extremely public, open, and transparent process for about the next six months. The first step of that was naming a “Local Planning Committee” that will be charged with managing the process and ultimately making project funding recommendations to the state. As Mayor, I am co-chair of the committee, along with Al Samuels, who is the CEO of the Rockland Business Association and the representative for the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council (which recommended Nyack’s grant application to the state). Below, you can see all the members of the Committee, including a range of Nyack residents, Nyack business owners, and local and regional economic development specialists. My thanks to all of them for their commitment to the Village!
The first step in the open process of reviewing projects is coming up soon, with the first LPC public meeting this Tuesday, May 6th, from 5:30-7:30PM, at The Angel Nyack, 18 South Broadway in Nyack. The meeting is open to the public, and will also be broadcast on our youtube channel at www.nyack.link/youtube.
2. Nyack Tourism Grant Application Process is Open! We are delighted to let you know that the next round of the Nyack Tourism Grants (NTG) is now open. NTGs are funded from a tax on hotel room occupancy and awarded to applicants to pay for media and PR buys to promote projects that attract people to visit Nyack, especially for overnight stays. Projects can be either individual events or experiences. Experiences are themes and programs which highlight special features and assets of Nyack such as “Outdoors”, “Foodie”, “History”, etc. throughout the year. There were 47 grants awarded in the last four rounds, totaling $147,200, with an average of about $3,100 per grant. These included grants for the Phoenix Festival, ArtsRock, Nyack International Film Festival, Dancing in the Streets, and more. In this round, grant amounts are expected to range from $1,000 to $7,500, supporting projects scheduled between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026. If you interested in participating in this round, please review the details and deadlines and download any required documents from the Village of Nyack dedicated website here. Our thanks to our friend, Thomas Schneck, of Visit Nyack for all the hard and excellent work he does coordinating the NTGs throughout this process. Have a great week, everyone!
